Firewall – remove and keep it away

Now for some of you folks who really use your BlackBerrys to there full potential may have the same problems that I had.

Now most technical issues can be sorted by crackberry.com and I found a solution.

BUT WAIT>>>> all links you will need will be at the end of this post, also please note this is how i did it and am happy, if you destroy your phone it is not my fault! do at your own risk!

The problems you will face are you will no longer be able to run desktop manager, so that brings me to my next problem. Backups!

Don’t worry,  I have a plan, a beta plan by s4bb (to be reviewed when I have time) Please note this is a beta program so may contain bugs, I however have been using it and have not had any major issues! It is called DataBackup.

Now I learned the hard way, what I did was a backup, then remove firewall settings followed by a restore! can you guess what happened? once desktop manager was run the firewall locked back down.

So I give you my rundown on how To remove it policy and keep it off.

1 – Backup bbm contacts

2- For safety backup on Desktop manager for the just in case

3- Load and run DataBackup (backup to memory card)

4- Make sure any mail attachments are downloaded to your BlackBerry memory card for access at later times if needed.

4- Run crackutil (again links all at end)

WARNING Removing the it policy will restore the phones settings back to factory, you will however keep your applications!

5- Go to advanced settings and click reset it policy. Do not Unplug phone just let it do its thing, it will take some time so just let it do its thing. You will know when it is ready as it will be back to home screen.

6- After its finished rebooting Resent service books. (this is any mail accounts you have. still stuck see device switch article for more info)

7- Run databackup and put all your backed up data back to your phone. If you have any problems restore one application at a time.

8- Restore bbm contacts and send a broadcast to make sure all are still with you.

9- Set your phone up back to how you want it, things like wallpaper, font, ring tones, alarms etc.

10- Open mass storage on your phone and copy the data backup file from memory card onto your pc.

This is so you have a solid back up away from your phone in case of emergency! (A example would be that you flush your phone down the toilet! You would need to reinstall data back up on your replacement BlackBerry, copy the data backup  file from PC back to phone. Then restore data.

Magic, you are free, but remember running desktop manager will put firewall back to lock!

viigo – review

If you are like me you like to float from site to site, this is good but I tend to find that most sites blast you with the same old thing, some even copied straight over.
Now viigo is not new, its been around for a while and has now been taken over by Rim.
I used to use viigo then I stopped. I’m back on it now!
You can put all your favorite blackberry websites into the rss feed and have everything you need in one place.

But there is a lot more to it then just that, I really recommend just checking it out, there is something everyone would use from Mr businessman to the youtube video watcher.

Some of the things I use viigo for are:

  • weather
  • travel news
  • blackberry site surfing
  • pod-casting
  • movie times in my area
  • youtube

Well I could keep the list going but there is no point as I’m guessing you get the picture.

Some people have lots of little apps such as a stand alone weather application, (Burnsie I’m talking to you lol) well with viigo I have 7 weather locations so I know how hot it is in some places while I look out the window at the rain.

So Point your Blackberry or Browser here to find out more and download viigo

It is well worth the visit.

Storm 2 and Bold 2 – My Toys – My Views

So I am currently running 2 BlackBerries, a storm 2 and bold 2!

Both are great phones, One is my main BlackBerry which I have bis on. It is a bit pointless to have it on both. I keep all my contacts and calender’s up to date using some of  Google’s applications which are made for the BlackBerry.
The best way for me to do that is to do a sim switch and update the BlackBerry which does not carry the bis account. You may think its a pain in the behind but this is only done once every so often, I do not have to do on a weekly basis unless I make some big changes on my phone.
Although I am loving the storm 2 their is a  few things which I find a little annoying, they are:

  1. No keys, I’m getting good at the touch keypad and it is one of the better ones I have used. (don’t do apple before you say anything) However if you made a mistake it is a pain in the ass to get back to correct or edit as you have to be patient. To correct or edit on the 9700 using the touch pad is effortless.
  2. Web pages, now the storm is better for this but its still a little frustrating when you try to edit address or selecting a link or section to type in and you blow the screen up so big a mole could see it from a distance!
  3. Reset, you cant do a simple reset like you can on the 9700 (left shift, right alt and delete)   I had to install quick pull on the 9520.
  4. Responsiveness, the storm 2 can slow down and when you trying to be quick you seem to take even longer and struggle to do simple things like unlock the phone. I unlock, lock, unlock, lock and impatience makes it harder as it slows pushing all your commands through. I even get it when typing sometimes, it has a delay on what you are writing.

Despite the problems the storm 2 has with the internet, it is still better then the standardnon touch BlackBerry browsers.

The Bottom line then is the storm 2 is a pain in the ass!

However there is something about it that still draws me to it, something pulling it apart from the other BlackBerrys, its cool cl-icky function when you press the screen, the gentle strokes you have to make to move up and down, the blue behind your finger when you press buttons, Its all so inviting.

lets not forget to mention not all applications will work on it because its a touch screen.

So now you know that the bold 2 is a better phone, this does not mean a storm 2 is no good! it is a lovely phone and despite all I have said the Storm 2 is Currently my main phone!

(but for how long???)

J Converter 2 (free unit converter) – Review

I cant tell you how this application is one of those which you think you don’t need till you do, or until someone asks you!

I was at work the other day and someone asked me if  I knew how many gallons in a litre, my diary told the answer. I was asked about something else which google solved!
This J converter 2 is great, it does pretty much everything you would use and more.  Even a few you may play with but will never have any use for.

Do you know how many watts are produced with 1 horsepower ???

The layout of the application is nice, it is broken down into sections so it is easy to see and find what you are converting.

This is a free application and I highly recommend getting it.

BIC® Concert Lighter! – Review

Picture yourself at a venue of your choice (concert, rave, club, well you get the picture)

  • a lighter
  • click to light flame
  • zoom in on the  flame (top picture)

OPERA MINI

Now you all know Opera has made its jump out of beta, so I decided to put it to the test. Detailed information about Opera can be found here

I have used it on and off since I’ve been using BlackBerry

Is it quicker then the original browser? Yes, well I found it to be at least, and it also has a nicer layout. The start page is set so you can add your most used websites. My favorite option is being able to open more then one web page at once. Great when you want to look at multiple sites at once. Turning mobile view off in settings will load up the web page in all its glory enabling you to move around and zoom in, using mobile view pushes everything into a single column view.

Overall it is a impressive browser, one thing which you never could do from a alternate browser was a OTA download. When I put the OTA address into Opera it opened the standard browser for the download, I was impressed.

m:IQ – backup your phone (review)

Just put this application to the test.
First up for those who do not know about this application let me put the features of the application.
Features:

• Full contact sync between your phone & the Web
• Read, reply, and create new text messages from your computer – threaded by conversation
• Add, edit and delete calendar events from the web
• Instantly upload photos
& videos to the Web where you can view, edit, organize & share to Facebook, Flickr, & Twitter
• Update your status on Facebook & Twitter
• Visual voicemail on your computer
• Set Web favorites, ringtones & speed dials from your computer
• Transfer contacts & settings from your old phone to your new one

Now I’m not one for posting my pictures and media all over the place, I am one for making sure my data is backed up.

This Is a good application for backing up your data, I use google for contact backup as google mail is one of my main email accounts. With mIQ you have the ability to choose what you want to sync:

  • contacts
  • calendar
  • messages
  • calls
  • photos
  • videos

This is great, not only do you have complete backups of all your media, you have the option to share or keep for yourself. The interface is very nice and even allows you to watch or view your backed up data.

Now the bad things:

  1. MIQ does not recognise my phone. (bold 9700)
  2. When I tried to download one of my pictures it just asks me to “select a location to download media” but I cant find how or where to do this!
  3. Any text messages you send do not show on your phone.
  4. The first sync takes ages, the more you have the longer it takes, I used wifi connection for this and it was still taking a long time.
  5. When you delete pictures from your blackberry they stay on mIQ
  6. When you delete from mIQ they stay on the blackberry device

I did notice that while the application is running it will automatically sync any changes, I have got sync set to manual and it still uploaded the pictures.

Overall its a worthwhile application to have, your data all backed up and secure. If you are a Facebook, Twitter or Flickr then this site will help you share.
